Vocabulary #7

1. Cursory- hasty and therefore not thorough or detailed.
ex. Some people have very cursory writing and makes it harder to read.
2. Impetus- the force or energy with which a body moves.
ex. When running you need impetus to keep going.
3. Pinnacle- a high, pointed piece of rock.
ex. In motivating movies the main actor always reaches his pinnacle.
4. Contumely- insolent or insulting language or treatment.
ex. Some pet owners are contumely towards their pets.
5. Bereavement- mourning: state of sorrow over the death or departure of a loved one
ex. My dad was bereavement when his brother, my uncle, past away.
6. Cache- a collection of items of the same type stored in a hidden or inaccessible place.
ex. Every browser has a cache.

7. Consummation- the point at which something is complete or finalized.
ex. When people finally have consummation work they feel a sense of accomplishment.
8. Calamity- an event causing great and often sudden damage or distress; a disaster.
ex. Hurricanes are calamity when they hit land.
9. Avarice- extreme greed for wealth or material gain.
ex. There is a stereotype that wealthy business people are avarice
10. Fortify- strengthen (a place) with defensive works so as to protect it against attack.
ex. Trenches were a means to fortify their defense post.
11. Erratic- not even or regular in pattern or movement; unpredictable.
ex. The mathematical number pie is erratic.
12. Ubiquitous- present, appearing, or found everywhere.
ex. Water seems to be ubiquitous when in the middle of the ocean.
13. Fortitude- courage in pain or adversity.
ex. Our armed forces are said to be fortitude.
14. Nonchalant- (of a person or manner) feeling or appearing casually calm and relaxed; not displaying anxiety, interest, or enthusiasm.
ex. Teachers hate having students that are always nonchalant in their classroom.
15. Affect- have an effect on; make a difference to.
ex. Birth defects were that affect of nuclear radiation.
16. Effect- a change that is a result or consequence of an action or other cause.
ex. Movies use special effect in their scenes. 
17. Misappropriate- (of a person) dishonestly or unfairly take (something, esp. money, belonging to another) for one's own use.
ex. Using wrong vocabulary with different people can be misappropriate
18. Pragmatic- dealing with things sensibly and realistically in a way that is based on practical rather than theoretical considerations.
ex. In labs for physics class we use pragmatic calculations before the theoretical calculations.
19. Meta cognition- awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes.
ex. In Expository Reading and writing we use meta cognition for critical thinking.
20. Devoutly- in a devout and pious manner
ex. Some terrorist think that they were devoutly in their religion.
